“Dropped” with the Keefer Bros. Season One: The Adventure Behind the Adventure

October 02, 2017

The Keefer Brothers Chris and Casey sit with Drew to discuss early life, hockey, hunting, and the emergence of their award winning show “Dropped”. The conversation includes details from season one in Alaska the camera can’t capture. It’s packed full of adventure, and the life-lessons that ensue.

1:06 It was always hockey or hunting, and that’s how we grew up.

4:21 Grandfather and dad used to breed beagles. Started out with a .22 and a shotgun. Rabbits, pheasants, squirrels.

4:47 Not necessarily the action of hunting but going back to the old jeep wagoneer, the comradarie.

7:20 Print management from Ferris State. No Stanley Cups in our future. Started guiding, and fell in love with what I’d missed for the last 10 years with hockey.

10:20 Would you go along and film the hunt? Casey didn’t even let me finish, he’s like “I’m in.”

12:54 We’ve had some of the most iconic brands come through this house.

16:10 What if we did something totally different? If we’re going to be out there 30 days, why don’t we just make it it’s own standalone series? The whiskey bottle got emptier, we decided to not take any food.

17:01 Wish we could watch the outdoors for what it was meant to be. Not about a kill shot, or particular product, just go out there and document the hunt from start to finish, the ebbs & flows. The whole nine yards.

18:40 We’ve got this amazing idea. We don’t want to pay for it. We want you to pay for it.

18:52 Met with the executives of the Sportsman’s Channel… Didn’t really have a name for the show…”So let me get this straight, you guys are going to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere for thirty days, with no food?” As soon as he left we said “hey, that’s it – the name of the show is “Dropped”.

20:14 Did anybody really pack a snickers?

26:25 The minute you hit the ground in the middle of nowhere, staring 30 days in the face with no food, plans tend to go to hell in a handbag.

32:20 We ended up eating the entire caribou over the course of 18 days, and we’re rationing at that.

41:00 Helio Courier, awesome little plane that can carry quite a bit.

44:28 Never in a million years thought you fellas were gonna do it. Dumps out the bag and it’s mcDonald’s breakfast burritos. We were like a pack of wolves.

46:09 Back on pavement, we go to get our rental car, guns on our hips. Still on edge. The smell of perfume was overpowering. Trying to get adapted to the everyday hustle and bustle.

Life Lessons:

Casey – Dare to be different. Success doesn’t happen by accident. Perseverance – not a lot of traffic on the extra mile.

Chris – Be alive. Do something you never thought you’d do. Work hard and have patience. We live in America, you can do it.
